Opening Ceremony

This year’s opening ceremony will take place the form of a roundtable on European Solidarity. Four experts from various EU-related fields will offer a number of different perspectives and understandings of European solidarity and allow for a fruitful debate. SFM hopes that the debate will push our participants to explore new grounds of European political thinking and allow them to form sophisticated ideas. Below you will find the speakers that have confirmed their participation in the roundtable.


Dr. Ignacio Álvarez Peralta

Dr. Peralta received his PhD from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is a professor at the Economics department of the Universidad de Valladolid. Furthermore, he holds the position of the Senior Economic Advisor to the Spanish left-wing political party Podemos. He has been a co-author of several recently published books and other works including “Fractures and Crisis in Europe”.


Dr. Ulrike Guérot

Dr. Guérot is the founder of the European Democracy Lab at the European School of Governance in Berlin, which is a think tank committed to explore the future of European democracy and fostering the idea of a European community founded on the common principle of political equality. Next to her 20 years experience in the European think tank community, Dr. Guérot has also appeared as a lecturer at various renowned universities in Europe and the US.


Dr. Malcolm Ross

As a former Professor of European Law and the Head of the Law Department of Sussex University, Dr. Ross is currently active in EU scholarship and research with special interest in the areas of solidarity, EU citizenship and EU competition law. Moreover, he acted as an expert evaluator for the EU Commission regarding applications made under its Horizon 2020 calls and co-edited the book “Promoting Solidarity in the European Union”.


Ms. Sixtine Bouygues

Ms Bouygues is a Deputy Director General responsible for the EU Commission Representations in the Member States, as well as communication with citizens. Furthermore, she is in charge of strategy and corporate communication, media analysis and research as well as several other fields. As the founder of the Françaises d’Europe network, Ms Bouygues has established a platform connecting French women leaders in middle and senior management positions in the European Commission and other EU institutions.
